Upgrade from 2.X to NoteSwift 3.0

Before You Start

  • Before upgrading, make note of the settings on each of the tabs under NoteSwift > Options
  • After upgrading, in your NoteSwift User Profile.
    • Set “Version” to the correct version of Allscripts Professional EHR.
    • If your Allscripts Professional Clinical Module is running anywhere other than on your local computer (such as on a Remote Desktop or Citrix server) you’ll need to check the “Remote” checkbox before opening your NoteSwift User Profile.
  • Contact NoteSwift’s technical support if you use Plan Aliases or if the NoteSwift Plan command does not work correctly after the upgrade.

Detailed Upgrade Steps

The steps needed to upgrade NoteSwift depend on how Allscripts Professional EHR is set up. If you have Clinical Module installed directly on your local desktop, see “For Local EHR Client Customers.” If Clinical Module (the Allscripts Professional EHR User Interface) is accessed by logging into a Remote Desktop, run from a RemoteApp icon on the local desktop, run from the Citrix Receiver, or accessed by connecting to Citrix XenApp, see “For Remote Desktop (RDP) and Citrix Customers.” If Clinical Module is accessed by going to an Allscripts website, see “For Allscripts ProSuite Cloud-based Customers.”

For Local EHR Client Customers

Download the NoteSwift 3.0 client installer program from http://download.noteswift.com/noteswift/allscriptspro/3.0/client

On each computer where NoteSwift is installed, do the following steps:

  1. Copy the Noteswift client installer program to the local computer.
  2. Right-click the installer program and select “Run as Administrator” as shown below.

  1. Click through the installer: “Next,” “I accept the terms in the License Agreement,” “Next,” and accept the default installation path. On the “Remote Support” dialogue, select “No” as shown below.

  1. For each NoteSwift user profile on the computer, select the profile, note the EHR Version number, click Change, make sure that EHR is set to “Allscripts Professional EHR” not “Allscripts Professional ERH (Server).” Set the Version to the correct EHR version number.

For Remote Desktop (RDP) and Citrix Customers

NoteSwift Server Upgrade for Remote Desktop (RDP) and Citrix Customers

Download the NoteSwift 3.0 client installer program from http://download.noteswift.com/noteswift/allscriptspro/3.0/server

During a time when no one is using NoteSwift, go to each of the servers hosting Clinical Module (the Allscripts Professional EHR User Interface), and do the following steps.

  1. Start Windows Task Manager, go to the “Processes tab,” check the “Show processes from all users” checkbox. Make sure the processes are sorted alphabetically; use the column header on the “Image Name” column to sort. See the image below.

  1. If there are any NoteSwiftServer.exe processes running, find the name of the NoteSwift user using the User Name value and ask them to close NoteSwift Server or arrange a different time to do the NoteSwift Server Upgrade.
  2. When there are no NoteSwiftServer.exe processes found in the previous step, copy the NoteSwift Server installer program to the server.
  3. Right-click the installer program and select “Run as Administrator” as shown below.

  1. Click through the installer: “Next,” “I accept the terms in the License Agreement,” “Next,” and accept the default installation path. On the “Remoting Type” dialogue, select the correct option depending on whether the server is a RDP Terminal Server or a Citrix XenApp server.

  1. Make sure that each NoteSwift user has access to shortcut that can be used to start NoteSwift Server 3.0. For Remote Desktop this involves going to each user’s desktop folder and making sure that there is a shortcut to the current NoteSwiftServer.exe file. Test the shortcut out by executing it. A NoteSwift Server icon should appear on the remote taskbar. Close the NoteSwift Server program.

NoteSwift Client Upgrade for Remote Desktop (RDP) and Citrix Customers

Download the NoteSwift 3.0 client installer program from http://download.noteswift.com/noteswift/allscriptspro/3.0/client

On each computer where NoteSwift is installed, do the following steps:

  1. Copy the Noteswift client installer program to the local computer.
  2. Right-click the installer program and select “Run as Administrator” as shown below.

  1. Click through the installer: “Next,” “I accept the terms in the License Agreement,” “Next,” and accept the default installation path. On the “Remote Support” dialogue, select the correct option depending on whether the NoteSwift Server is installed on RDP Terminal Servers or Citrix XenApp servers as shown below.

  1. Start Dragon Medical so that you can run NoteSwift in the next step.
  2. Start NoteSwift client. For each NoteSwift user profile on the computer, select the profile, note the EHR Version number, click Change, make sure that the “EHR” field is set to “Allscripts Professional EHR” not “Allscripts Professional ERH (Server).” Set the “EHR Version” field to the correct EHR version number.

  1. Select a NoteSwift user profile, check the “Remote” checkbox, click “Open” to save the change, and then close NoteSwift client.

  1. Notify users that, unlike in NoteSwift 2.x, they will now have to Check the “Remote” checkbox to connect to NoteSwift Server running on the Remote Desktop server or Citrix server.

For Allscripts ProSuite Cloud-based Customers

NoteSwift Server Upgrade for Cloud-based Customers

Contact Allscripts Support and request to have the LaunchNoteSwift.cmd file in your Practice Share\NoteSwift folder upgraded to the version that launches NoteSwift 3.0 and to give you notice of when the change will occur so that you can schedule your NoteSwift client upgrade. Once Allscripts Support completes this step, the NoteSwift client will automatically update when it is next used. Make sure you have permission to add/remove software in order to complete this process. The NoteSwift 3.0 installer will run automatically. 

NoteSwift Client Upgrade for Cloud-based Customers

After Allscripts Support has completed your NoteSwift Server upgrade your NoteSwift 2.x client users will get an error when they try to open their NoteSwift profiles and connect to NoteSwift Server.  Another change is that you’ll see a 3.0.x.y version number when you maximize NoteSwift Server window.

Once you are sure that Allscripts Support has completed your NoteSwift Server upgrade, use the steps below to upgrade NoteSwift client.

Download the NoteSwift 3.0.17.0 client installer program from http://download.noteswift.com/noteswift/allscriptspro/3.0/client/3_0_17_0

On each computer where NoteSwift is installed, do the following steps:

  1. Copy the Noteswift client installer program to the local computer.
  2. Right-click the installer program and select “Run as Administrator” as shown below.
